The How & Why of Badlands Education
Hey, I’m Heather. A hairstylist whose skin sensitivities ultimately led to a dreamy career path of salon ownership, online curriculum development, and Badlands Hair Education.
Hairdressing has always been a long time love of mine, but after 10 years behind the chair I developed contact dermatitis from over exposure to toxins used in the salon (a common problem in hair world that’s not often talked about).
It took a bit (i.e. years) to learn the ins and outs of cleaner hairdressing, but after moving to Bend from Portland Oregon I was able to rebuild an entire clientele in less than 12 months as a more conscious, holistic, and non-toxic stylist.
That experience led to the creation of an online course (Holistic Hair School) so this newfound knowledge could be shared with fellow stylists. Although the ability to serve individuals anywhere in the world was incredible, sometimes the calling to serve your local community is too hard to ignore. With a little luck, a clear mission, and handfuls of wildly supportive humans, Badlands Hair Studio opened its doors in January of 2022.
After the success of the salon due to it’s highly sought after values (e.g. inclusivity, continuing education, clean/non-toxic hair care, sustainability efforts, working with all hair types, strong team culture, and conscious leadership + salon practices), it only made sense to return to online education with the goal of supporting both stylists & salon owners in achieving similar successes.
These past 16 years as a hairstylist turned educator turned studio owner have been a wild ride filled with MASSIVE growth and learning, but it’s a career path I feel incredible grateful for and couldn’t imagine any other way.
